Fall 2007 – A group of co-workers approach Family Services with a business plan to start up a new day program. They envisioned a holistic program which offers extensive programming to the individuals they serve. Participants would be given the opportunity to gain skills through work experience, facility based programming such as literacy, numeracy, computer applications as well as recreational activities and travel. People would have ample opportunity to choose and participate in the activities they were interested in, then they would have a chance to socialize both inside and outside of program through dances and other events which are inclusive of other programs.
Winter 2007 – A Board of Directors is formed, by-laws written, policies and procedures discussed and reams of papers submitted to various offices.
February 2008 – OPT was incorporated.
Fall 2008 – OPT receives its status as a registered charity in Canada. The hunt was on for a location. After months of phone calls, emails, faxes, and after receiving a number of rejections, the Windsor Community Centre welcomed us.
January 2009 – OPT opened its doors and started the program with one participant.
February 2011 – The lease is signed for the 288 Marion location. Renovations soon begin.
December 2011 – Renovations are completed.
February 2012 – OPT moves into 288 Marion with 15 participants.
October 2015 – OPT opens second location at 177 Eugenie. 13 participants transfer over.
As of April 2022 we have 60 participants based in two locations at 288 Marion and 177 Eugenie, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Since OPT's inception in 2008, we still have 7 of the original participants that started with us at Windsor CC!
